The Penn State Greater Allegheny Athletic Department is pleased to announce the new head coach of the Penn State Greater Allegheny men's soccer team for the 2016-17 academic year.
Sullinger is a home-grown native, born and raised in McKeesport. A graduate of McKeesport in 1985, men's soccer was not then offered, so he took up wrestling, football and track-and-field - even ice hockey for a team in South Pittsburgh.
After McKeesport, Walt joined the United States Marine Corp. While with the Marine Corp., Sullinger was not only stationed at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba as a Tank Commander, the athlete played fullback for the Marine Barracks Soccer Team. Walt participated in 13 league matches as well as two exhibition friendlies vs Jamaica and Dominican Republic National Teams in 1986.
1987 brought Sullinger stateside, as he was stationed at Marine Air Ground Task Force Base in Twentynine Palms, California. He continued athletics as he appeared in 16 matches for the TwentyNine Palms Base League. Sullinger stated, "My military soccer career was a phenomenal experience against high-level players who grew up playing from different countries."
Sullinger began coaching youth soccer in the Pittsburgh area in 2004, when his daughters took an interest. Quickly gaining a passion for coaching and educating kids, Walt occupied 2004 to 2013 with players from the U8 to U18 age groups in PA West Soccer at Travel and Classic division, as well as Indoor USSF Futsal at Competitive Cup Level.
In 2006, Sullinger served as a co-founder of a SAEF Futsal Club, where he organized, coached and assisted teams from U12 to U18 in several leagues to continue the growth and promotion of Futsal. From 2010 to 2014, SAEF sponsored teams who participated in Regional events around Akron and Cleveland, Ohio including the Cleveland State Indoor Classic.
Sullinger is currently coaching PA West Classic U15 Boys from the Pittsburgh area for the PFC, Pittsburgh Football Club. His coaching licenses include US Soccer Youth Licenses U6 to U12 Modules, US Soccer F License, NSCAA Level Six, NFHS Fundamental Certificate, and Coerver Coaching Courses, where his Youth Diploma Course is scheduled for July 9th-10th.
