McKeesport, Pa. - Its time for you to vote for the best single game performance of the first half of the Penn State Greater Allegheny Athletic Season. Since Jordon Payne won the most memorable moment of the first half with his 40 point performance against Southern State, he does not qualify for this award. The finalist are listed below.
Marin Marina: 10 Shots, 3 Goals, 6 Shots on Goal @ PSU-Mont Alto.
Marin Marina (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin HS) has been a leader on the PSUGA soccer team each of his four years on the team. The 2017 season was one of his best, however, as he saw his goal scoring go up and he became a consistent player for the soccer team. He led the team in goals, points, and shots on goal throughout the season and was in the top five in all of the Penn State University Athletic Conference with those numbers as well. Marina's performance against Mont Alto kickstarted one of the best season in PSUGA soccer history.
Laura Vazquez Diaz: 12 Kills, 17 Total Attacks, .412 Pct. vs. PSU-Lehigh Valley.
Laura Vazquez Diaz (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Cupey Maria Montessori) was a leader on the court for the PSUGA volleyball team this season. She helped lead a young core of talent through the season and took the lead in almost all offensive categories including kills, total attacks, and digs. Vazquez Diaz had the highest hitting percentage of any player this season against Lehigh Valley and helped keep the winning streak going that got PSUGA volleyball back into the running for playoff contention.
Jayla Ellis: 27 Points, 8 Rebounds vs. Butler County Community College
Jayla Ellis (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) has been the bright spot in an otherwise slow season for PSUGA Women's Basketball so far. Ellis got her season started off on the right note with this performance against BCCC. Ellis has scored in double digits in all but two games so far this season and is leading the team to this point averaging 15.3 points per game. Ellis came onto the basketball scene with a bang last year joining the team in the second semester and in 12 games she scored 111 points and was a big part of the offense that season as well.
Curtis Newby: 29 Points, 14 Rebounds @ PSU-Beaver
Curtis Newby (Sharon, Pa,/Sharon HS) put up monster numbers against Penn State Beaver to help PSUGA get off to a good start in their PSUAC title defense season. Newby came into the game needing 25 points to reach the 1,000 point milestone in his collegiate career ande he did that and more to help his team pick up a close victory. Newby has been a double-double machine in his PSUGA career and that has continued this season as he has picked up seven double-doubles in 12 games played this season and he currently sits nine rebounds away from breaking the school record.
