University Park, Pa. – Wednesday marked the beginning of the Penn State University Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer playoffs as the quarterfinal matchups got underway. #1 seed Penn State Brandywine and #2 seed Penn State Greater Allegheny would each have a first round bye as they patiently awaited their opponent for the semi-final round.
However, four other teams were hard at work as the quarterfinal round pitted #3 seed Penn State Hazleton against #6 see Penn State Beaver and #4 seed Penn State York against #5 seed Penn State New Kensington.
The results of these two matchups could not have been more opposite from each other. On one hand, PSU-Hazleton dominated PSU-Beaver picking up a 6-2 win. On the other hand, you had a very tightly contested match between PSU-York and PSU-New Kensington with New Kensington just squeaking by with a 2-1 victory to send them to the semifinal round.
For PSU-Hazleton, Moussa Diouf would rule the day picking up his first hat trick of the season in the 6-2 win. Diouf notched the first two goals of the match early in the 39th and 40th minute of play before completing the hat trick with a goal in the 62nd minute that gave Hazleton a 5-1 lead and put the game out of reach. For New Kensington, it came down to the wire tied 1-1 going into the 80th minute of play. Fabian Vilca would break the tie and give New Kensington the victory in the 82nd minute scoring the game winning goal for his team.
With the quarterfinal round in the books, it sets up the matchups for this Saturday’s PSUAC Semifinal Round. #1 seed Penn State Brandywine hosts #5 seed Penn State New Kensington at 12 p.m. and #2 seed Penn State Greater Allegheny will welcome in #3 seed Penn State Hazleton at 1 p.m. The winner of those two matchups will meet at University Park on Wednesday November 1st for the 2017 PSUAC Men’s Soccer Championships at 6 p.m.
Penn State Greater Allegheny is looking to make its first trip to the PSUAC championships since the 2015/16 season when they faced Penn State Beaver. The game on Saturday against Penn State Hazleton will be played at the Francis McClure Elementary School which is located at 500 Longvue Dr, White Oak, PA 15131.
