Pittsburgh, Pa. - The Penn State Greater Allegheny women's softball team takes their record to 6-4, 4-2 in the Penn State University Athletic Conference, as GA took two victories over Penn State Schyulkill, Sunday afternoon, by scores of 7-3 and 5-4.
Four and a half innings cruised by as both teams went scoreless. Greater Allegheny was the first on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning. Sophomore infielder Ashley Lowenstein (San Jose, Calif./Presentation) batted in junior infielder Kelli Hall (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport Area) before freshman catcher Kasey Dansak (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport Area) batted in freshman outfielder Adrielle Brisbon (Fort Washington, Md./Friendly). Sophomore outfielder Shelby Bendick (White Oak, Pa./McKeesport Area) singled to bring in Lowenstein. Senior outfielder Casey Naylor (Glassport, Pa./South Allegheny) singled to bat two runs in from junior infielder Jordyn Holsing (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) and Bendick. Greater Allegheny inflated to 5-0 over Schyulkill heading into the top of the sixth.
Schyulkill was able to get on the board with three runs in the sixth as Greater Allegheny saw two more when Bendick doubled to bring home Dansak and Lowenstein. The top of the seventh saw four batters, sitting down three and giving Greater Allegheny their third consecutive conference win on the weekend.
Senior pitcher Sam Segiel (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) gained her third win on the season as she allowed just three hits through seven innings and 30 batters. Bendick went 3-for-4 from the plate as she added one run and three RBI's. Holsing and Lowenstein both went 2-for-4 at the plate, adding three runs combined.
Greater Allegheny was the first on the board in game two in the bottom of the first. Holsing singled and batted a run in, as Dansak crossed home plate putting GA up 1-0. Schyulkill tied the game at one in the top of the third making the game a nail-biter.
Freshman infielder Marina Rinaldi (Philadelphia, Pa./Philadelphia High School for Girls) obtained her fourth home run on the season, as she hit a solo shot to lift GA ahead 2-1. The bottom of the fifth saw Greater Allegheny offense hits, lifting Greater Allegheny's efforts over Schyulkill.
Holsing singled, advancing to second on the throw, as she sent both Dansak and Lowenstein across home plate. Segiel also singled, advancing to second on the throw, sending Bendick to mark the fifth and final tally for the home team. Schyulkill nabbed three runs in the top of the sixth inning, but was not enough to overtake Greater Allegheny, as the game finished by a tally of 5-4.
Bendick grabbed her third win on the season as her team took their second win over Schyulkill and their fourth conference win on the weekend. Both Rinaldi and Lowenstein went 2-for-3 at the plate along with notching one run apiece.
After a huge weekend for Greater Allegheny (6-4, 4-2), the women take a few days to rest before they travel to Penn State Fayette for another set of Penn State University Athletic Conference games. First pitch is set for Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m.
