McKeesport, Pa. - Behind sixth-year head coach Mark Bacco, the Penn State Greater Allegheny cross country's team is gearing up for their competitive season ahead.
Last season, the Greater Allegheny Lions men's team finished first in the Penn State University Athletic Conference with the help of first place finisher, Michael Burchlaw.
"We were lucky to have Burchlaw run in the blue-and-white for the single season he had on campus," stated Bacco. "We have two returning runners from last season you the way of sophomore Ellis Massiah (Waterford, Ct./Waterford) and sophomore Michael Risnear (Harrison City, Pa./Penn-Trafford). Massiah comes back to the team ready to run, as the sophomore finished last season 2nd in the PSUAC. Michael has had the off-season to better prepare for competition, so we are really looking forward to him racing."
Beside the two returners, the Lions welcome freshman Fernando Leira to the small, but strong squad. "Fernando has been busy training, as the newcomer has been working hard and completing two-a-day runs on campus. His determination is unmatched and we look forward to see him compete through the PSUAC," said Bacco.
"I believe in the three men we have, we just need a few more to compete. We are in the midst of trying to build the remainder of the roster," extended Bacco. "We are striving for a repeat Championship run, slated for October 29."
