Men's Soccer Secures 1st Win of the Season, Broadwater Era
(McKeesport, PA)
On a hot, late summer afternoon, Greater Allegheny Men's Soccer secured their first win of the young season with a 4-1 defeat of Villa Maria on Sunday.
With 2 goals from TJ Knutson (Wausau, WI/DC Everest) one on a penalty kick in the first half, and, one on a late finish to take the tally to 4, the boys in blue gave Head Coach, Jason Broadwater the 1st victory of his college coaching career.
"You know, this one is special. All credit to our players today. They battled on a very warm day. We didn't always have our best but they found a way to grind out a win." said, Broadwater.
The scoring opened up on a Donovan Woytsek (Elizabeth, PA/Elizabeth Forward HS) goal assisted by Caleb Johnston (Independence, KS/Independence HS) in the first half. Knutson added his PK to make it 2-0 at half.
Villa Maria drew first in the second half to make it 2-1.
GA had a stressful moment when a penalty kick was awarded for Villa Maria midway through the second half. But, Goalkeeper Chris Klinger (Bedford, PA/Bedford HS) came up big for GA on the penalty save and the Nittany Lions grabbed the game from there.
Stuart Dare (Mifflintown, PA/ Juniata HS) scored his second goal of the season on a penalty kick in the second half and Brandin Jaki (Finleyville, PA/Ringgold HS) assisted on the final Knutson goal.
GA stands at 1-2 on the season and resumes play on Wednesday at Westmoreland County Community College.
