8 Regular Season Games to Play, Women's Volleyball Eyes More
(McKeesport, PA)
With 8 games to play in the regular season, Greater Allegheny Women's Volleyball sits at 9-5 overall and 4-1 in PSUAC play.
GA has been in good form as of late winning their last 4 matches, sweeping all but 1 set the last 4 times out on the court.
Alix Ellis (Derry, PA/ Derry Area HS) has led the way with 140 kills, tops in the PSUAC.
Ellis said, "There is so much determination and want to succeed within this group that we have. We've really stepped up our level of play in both non-conference and conference games and I truly attribute that to the heart that every person has for the game."
She added, I think we've done an exceptional job of translating our losses and games that went into longer sets into success because I feel as if everyone knows how special this group is."
Andrea Ghiloni (Granville, OH/ Granville HS) has helped bolster the kill totals with 171 assists, good for 4th in the PSUAC. Ghiloni also became the all-time assists leader in campus history passing Adrielle Brisbon's 823 assists earlier in the season.
Head Coach Alyssa Finocchi is pleased with the team's progress thus far. "The season so far is going great. We have beaten conference teams we have not beaten in past seasons and are leading the PSUAC standings for probably the first time ever." said, Finocchi.
GA continues their stretch of road contests with upcoming away matches at Shenango, DuBois, New Kensington, and Crossover State in State College. They return home on Oct. 13 against Penn State Beaver.
Finocchi added, "We have played some tough non-conference matches that we have ultimately lost but, we used those as learning lessons and areas to improve and the girls have really grown from the beginning of the season. I believe they have finally meshed together and mentally and physically are stronger than we started. This second stretch of the year will be a huge testament for us to try to stay on top."
Barring unforeseen circumstances, the playoff test will come soon to see if GA can ride the wave to a PSUAC championship and more.
"As we get into the second half of the season it's really important for us to stay on top of our game and continue the win streak we have going because the competition once we get to playoffs is very high." said, Ellis.
